Happy Mondays - Kinky Afro
I'm going through a bit of a Madchester nostalgia trip at the moment, and, having just listened to the Happy Monday's Pills Thrills and Bellyaches, I recalled that the video for the song 'Kinky Afro' was a bit of a classic. You can just about imagine the scene, where ideas for the video were being bandied about.
Director: Right lads, we've got a big budget, what do you fancy, concept-wise?
Shaun: Spend the lot on E, hire some models, we'll shoot the vid and then have a big party with 'em afterwards!
Director: Done!
ah yes, bez. also good at procuring the drugs, so the stories go.
officially their 'percussionist' according to various album liner notes, which really meant he danced around with a pair of maracas or a tambourine on occasion.
How about that guy in Frankie Goes to Hollywood? Was he anything more than Holly's bitch?
aha! Paul Rutherford. indeed.
another "Maracas Player".
Perhaps, in this case, a poorly disguised euphimism.
Lives in Queenstown now, didn't you know?
Maracas player... is that what the kids are calling it these days? (Warning: name-dropping ahead...) As an aside, I used to know Holly Johnson (lead singer, FGTH). Jolly nice fellow. Makes a good cup of tea. Fabulous art collection.
Remember the Madchester nights at the Worcester Bar in Christchurch? They were so good!
The Prodigy and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones both had band members who did nothing but dance.
Ah, the 90's
How the Happy Mondays kicked it a biiiiig US rock festival last weekend. Warning.. not well.
My favourite bit..
poor real Bez was denied U.S. entry due to tightened goofy dance import restrictions
I may be wrong, but I think the Happy Mondays are the only band who had a full-time member who did nothing, but dance.
