Ok then, inspired by Chris over at the
Big City MP3 blog, I've decided to add the occasional mp3 download to my site, starting with something I know I won't
get into trouble for, as it's one of my band's tracks. Actually, I might still get in trouble, but to hell with it.
This is one of my favourite Debris tracks. It contains all the crucial Debris song elements...
1) The lone guitar intro. We struggle to find the feel for nearly all of our songs straight off the bat, so we usually just let Aman play the first couple of bars alone to remind us just what the hell we were about to launch into, which was often...
2) Whacked out timing. I remember it took us about three months before we felt totally comfortable with the two totally different riffs used in this track. Try counting it out - it's a nightmare. The verse (the first bit, as we called it) is nearly, but not quite a straight 4 count, but really more of a 3 and a half count, then the chorus (the other bit), is, well, god knows what. It's all about the feel, you know?
3) 'Interesting' post-production. There's laser gun noise (or something) that gets triggered by the snare that I love. We re-did the bass with some more grunt after the initial recording, but, because of the crazed timing, it was impossible to click track it or use any other sort of cue. So, when the song dies about half-way through, and I'm expected to come back in with the big menacing bass growl, it was total guesswork on my behalf as to when to start the riff, and at what speed to play it at. It took about fifty takes to get it right.
4) Lyrical brilliance. I love Aman's lyrics. The song, incidentally, is about a peeping tom, and if "random'd out by space defyer" isn't the most poetic way to describe being the victim of a tree-climbing voyeur, then I'd like to see a better example. Here's the full lyrics, for those interested...
my god, been caught with a light on
random'd out by space defyer
open shutters, treeward, hiding
sick and tired
peel off your skin, make it bark
become that tree
no need to hide there
bringer of unease
violated, you anger me
my god, been caught with a light on
random'd out by space defyer
open shutters, treeward, hiding
I've been defiled
and you're out on your own
stalked by an outsider
and you're home all alone
my space defyer
guess I'll have to go now5) It's also typically short - we rarely play a song over four minutes long, and this one clocks in at two and a half. So, a nice small download for you. Away you go...
